Herein, a comprehensive review on the application of digital image correlation (DIC) for investigations strain localization phenomena in field materials science and engineering (MSE) is provided. The Review divided into three parts. In Part 1, method DIC reviewed terms basic principles, algorithms, sources errors. 2 focused MSE. This part subdivided 1) combination with optical microscopy 2) scanning electron (SEM). 3, results high-resolution obtained SEM are presented high-strength austenitic stainless steels—transformation-induced plasticity steels twinning-induced steels—exhibiting microscopic phenomena. These supplemented by backscattered diffraction interpretation fields. Although allows both 2D 3D calculations displacement fields, herein, referred to only, as particular only in-plane displacements calculated so far.
